Free things to do in London

Every list of free things in London has the same museums and parks on it, and they are free and they are good. What those lists miss is everything free that changes every week. Gallery openings with a drink, listening parties, launch nights, run clubs, walk-in club nights before 11. Those go on the map, and most of the map is free.

What free means here

On SendMeTheDrop, three of the four ways in are free. Walk-in: turn up. RSVP: tell them you're coming. Guestlist: ask, and the organiser chooses. Only Tickets cost money, and they show the price before you tap. The list above is walk-in, RSVP and guestlist only.

Free every week

  • Gallery openings. Usually Thursday, 6pm to 9pm, open to anyone. See exhibitions and openings.
  • Run clubs. Free, social, and most finish at a cafe or a pub. See run clubs in London.
  • Listening parties and launches. Free with an RSVP, often with a drink. See pop-ups in London.
  • Club nights before a set time. Many London nights are free or cheap before 11pm. See club nights.
  • Comedy new-material nights. Free or pay what you like, in pub back rooms. See comedy in London.

Free all the time

The national museums and galleries are free for their main collections, including the British Museum, the National Gallery, Tate Modern, Tate Britain, the V&A, the Natural History Museum and the Science Museum. Big temporary exhibitions usually charge. The Royal Parks are free, and so are most of London's markets to walk round.

Some of the City's high viewing gardens are free with a booking made in advance. Book early; slots go.

Free, not careless

If you RSVP to something free and can't go, cancel. Organisers plan food, drink and the door around the number, and the person on the waiting list gets your place.
